These colorful birds are a fair trade product handmade in Kenya. They are hand-carved out of stone, sanded until smooth, and dyed. Then an artisan uses a knife to etch the patterns into each bird. Sold individually.
The soapstone group was formed in order to work with Venture Imports. We are currently their only customer, so the more we are able to buy, the more they make! You will notice that some of the artisans mention that they have land or animals, or they are saving to get them. If they have either or both of these things, they can use them to feed their families and not have to pay the higher prices at the market. If their land and animals provide more than enough for their families, then they can sell the extra food at the market for more money.
